Desperate Prayer: Sermon by Leonard Ravenhill
Leonard Ravenhill illustrates from Hannah’s travail how intercession is likened to spiritual pregnancy and birth. As travail precedes the birth of a child, so birth pangs of desperate prayer precede revival. In the same way, travail in prayer precedes a work of God in our personal lives.
Ravenhill draws upon the heroic exploits of prayer warriors Rees Howell, John Hyde, Praying Payson, E. M. Bounds, David Brainerd, A. W. Tozer, Murray M’Cheyne, and Duncan Campbell.
This sermon echoes Ravenhill’s article The Gospel of Prayer.
Questions:
- Do you want someone else to write your love letters to God?
- Have you considered that the greatest prayers in the Bible have no language?
- The whole pattern of life is broken up with a pregnancy. Has your pattern of life changed such that you find prayer your greatest priority?
- Are you travailing in prayer? Birth pangs of desperate prayer precede a work of God, whether it is in our personal lives, our church, or our community.
- Are you asking God to bless you or to make you a blessing?

NEEDED PRAYER – My nephew Nathaniel Gaver and his family were arrested in Cottonwood, AZ in March 2015. Nathan has listened to Leonard Ravenhill's ministry and has asked me to ask prayer for his family. Their crime is trying to protect their family and for their family to stay together.
